Why are Bats Associated with Halloween?

Bats are often associated with Halloween for several reasons.

Folklore has always linked bats to death and the underworld.

Bram Stroker’s Dracula, the 1897 novel where vampires turned into bats at will, created an everlasting influence over public imagination regarding bats.

Bats can fly, so some cultures consider them a “liminal animal” — not quite bird or mammal. Another liminal animal? Halloween.

One of the major themes of Halloween is liminality, or the in-betweenness. It is between one state and another; between death and growth; between winter and spring, and the start of a new year. There are all sorts of symbols of that in-between-ness,” Steve Siporin, a history professor and folklorist at Utah State University, told Popular Science.

The original Halloween celebrations featured bonfires that attracted insects. These bonfires attracted many bats because they are nocturnal and eat insects. This led to the association of Halloween and bats.

How to Draw Halloween Bats

Be brave.

It’s easy to create your own bat template by hand.

Jodie is not an artist. This is one challenge that we can take on.

Take a look at our template and copy it as closely as you want.

Give yourself a couple tries.

Remember, in nature bats come in all shapes and sizes, so you don’t need to go for perfection.

You can also draw half of the bat and then fold it in half, if you find that easier.

Step 1.

Print out the template or draw your 1/2 bat silhouette free-hand if you prefer.

Step 2.

Copy the template or hand-drawn bat in several smaller or larger sizes using your copy machine to increase or decrease the size of the copy as desired.

Note that you only need one copy for each size of the template to be used as a tracing template.

Step 3.

Choose your paper. To trace your template, fold it in half.

Step 4.

Cut out your bats.

What material should you use for your bats?

Paper bats are fine if you’re using inside. They don’t last for more than one season.

If you want to use your bats outside like I did, you should choose a plastic waterproof craft paper, otherwise simple black construction paper will work.

Where to buy your bats?

We love these bats. These bats are durable, inexpensive and reusable.

How should you hang your bats?

There’s no right or wrong way. Hang them as if they were flying in nature…we’re imitating a swarm. It is a flawed science. Have fun. Check out these examples. There are plenty more fun Instagram examples.

What do you use to make the bats stick?

It depends on your surface. Double-sided tape is available in some kits, such as the one we have. Some surfaces are easy to work with, while others can be difficult. Be careful that you don’t damage your surface or remove any paint.
