Want to watch a YouTube or Netflix video while doing some work on your Mac?
The Benefits of Picture in Picture
Keeping a video on your screen is very useful. While you might be watching a Netflix series while taking notes, you can also use it to watch your favorite Netflix shows.
Some websites offer Picture in Picture but others are lacking. For example, YouTube’s Picture in Picture will cause the video to disappear as soon as you visit another website. This is no longer a problem if you use your browser’s Picture In Picture.
How to Watch Picture in Picture in Safari
Viewing Picture in Picture on most websites is easy with the built-in Safari browser for macOS. Just click or right-click on any video to view it in Picture in Picture. Then, use Ctrl+click to open the Safari browser and select “Enter Picture In Picture” from the menu.
This opens a video window which you can arrange on your desktop. This window can be resized to your liking, and you can place it anywhere you want. If you have multiple virtual desktops, it will stay exactly where you placed it.
YouTube and Netflix
Not all websites work with Safari’s Picture in Picture. YouTube uses its own menus for videos, so Picture in Picture may not work on every website. This is not the case.
To view YouTube videos in Safari you just need to click or right-click twice on the video. You will see YouTube’s menu first, and Safari’s standard menu second. After this pops up click “Enter Picture In Picture” to get everything set.
Netflix can be a little trickier because you won’t see any menus when you right-click on the video. Instead, play the video. This is crucial as the speaker icon will not appear in the address bar unless the video has started playing.
Now Click or Right-click on the speaker icon and choose “Enter Picture In Picture” to view your Netflix video in popover windows.
These techniques are compatible with most video streaming sites.

You can also use Media Control to view videos in Picture in Picture mode. The Media Control icon looks like a three-line musical note. To start watching, click on the Picture in Picture icon (one rectangle within another).
YouTube videos can be accessed using the same technique as Safari: Command-click or right click twice. It’s easy to use the Media Control method for Netflix.
All of this is included in Chrome. We have an extension that makes it even simpler to view picture in picture in Chrome.

What if the Picture in the Picture isn’t Working?
Some websites actively work to disable Picture in Picture mode, particularly if they offer it to paying subscribers. The PiPifier extension for Safari may enable Picture in Picture in some cases.
With certain websites, you might have to use a pop-out window if the site allows it. Although it isn’t the best solution, it’s better than nothing. You can create a floating browser window to view videos from sites such as this one by opening the Helium app on macOS.
If you use a Mac desktop or have your MacBook constantly docked, it may be worth looking into dual monitors for macOS to get a better streaming experience.
